Vesterbro, Copenhagen

Greening, mindfulness and the seasons into the city

The project's ambition is to create several small green spots on selected side streets of Istedgade with a portal of creepers that can provide a small mental sanctuary through the relaxing effect of nature. You might even choose to take a (sustainable) detour to experience it?

The green crosses will:

1. Be Mindful reminders that in a busy everyday life can:

      - Remind us that we can be mindful right in the moment when we see the green cross.

      - Remind us of other mindful tools we (might) know about.

      - Inspire us to stop and contemplate the plant and life with presence.

  2. Strengthen Istedgade's visual identity to make it more coherent throughout the day and year by

      - Creating a sensuous, soft and natural framing of the fast, hard and man-made urban life.

      - Offering passers-by a mental sanctuary (you can do something different than usual - like not having plants growing over the road)

      - Give each side street a unique character

  3. Create social employment

Istedgade Green Spots collaborates with both the employment team at Mændenes Hjem and Settlementet to train a competent team of green-fingered workers who can help look after and care for the green intersections in the side streets. We believe that green can inspire a sense of community across social backgrounds, cultures and generations - and create space for the vulnerable in Vesterbro, for example through green social employment.
