In November 2020, Freja Ejendomme A/S and DSB Ejendomsudvikling A/S issued a competition for a parallel assignment for urban development in Jernbanebyen ("The Railway-city"). Grandville (CFBO) was the competition secretariat.

Jernbanebyen is located in Copenhagen between Vesterbro, Kgs. Enghave and Teglholmen. With its past as a hub for all train traffic, the area offers character and visible traces of the past in the form of workshops, water towers and train tracks.

The two landowners, Freja Ejendomme A/S and DSB Ejendomsudvikling A/S, will develop the 365,000 m2 area into a new neighbourhood over the coming years.

In this development, the landowners work with the following 5 basic principles:

  • We want to build on Jernbanebyen's special culture, edge and creative forces
  • We want to create a green and urban neighbourhood in the heart of Copenhagen
  • We want to develop Jernbanebyen in balance between urban life and active communities and the calm of everyday life
  • We will develop a neighbourhood based on climate-friendly and sustainable principles
  • We want to develop Jernbanebyen together with Copenhageners and together with enthusiasts and investors with a long-term perspective

In our proposal for Jernbanebyen, we have the following six strategic tracks

  • Create an oasis with a focus on pedestrians and cyclists
  • Create ‘green canals’
  • Create new connections
  • Use everything
  • Create great diversity
  • Time as an important parameter

Where the first two tracks have the following vision: The railway city offers a unique opportunity to introduce a partly car-free city. A city where cars do not dominate the streetscape and a city where it is safe and secure to move around, where noise and noise is minimised and where green is the dominant feature of the urban spaces.

We have the opportunity to redefine the use of our public spaces and actually create attractive living environments that cater to a new type of movement space - a kind of green transport and living corridors become the framework for close communities - we call them ‘green channels’. And we have the opportunity to free up space for both buildings and community spaces. The ambition of a partially car-free neighbourhood calls for a rethink of the city's movement spaces.

We suggest defining all the city's road spaces as ‘green channels’. We start by planting trees in the road spaces as part of the green development. All movement spaces prioritise vulnerable road users and are designed with shared space principles. Car traffic will be allowed but will be de-prioritised.

The green canal spaces must embrace both the urban and the recreational and connect the entire Railway City internally. The ‘green canals’ are the infrastructure that, in addition to promoting biodiversity in the district, must be linked to the important connections to the city's surrounding neighbourhoods - not least Vesterbro and Carlsberg and Enghave Brygge, with its attractive water space and relation to the large harbour space.
