Viktoriagade/Abel Cathrines Gade

2016-2018

Vesterbro, København

Greening

Hjertepladsen (The Heart Space)

The project's ambition is to green and beautify Abel Cathrines Gade and Viktoriagade for the benefit of the residents and visitors in the streets as well as for the community and socializing in the streets.

In August 2017, Spektrum Arkitekter developed a proposal for greening Abel Cathrines Gade and Viktoriagade in collaboration with Kenneth Balfelt Team and residents and businesses from the two streets.

Approach
Abel Cathrines Gade and Viktoriagade have two overall development potentials:

1) The possibility of creating a green space/heart where Abel Cathrines Gade is adjacent to Viktoriagade by minimizing the road area here. This means less space for cars and more space for people and greenery.

2) The opportunity to create coherence and a common identity in the streetscape by greening the streets and creating an invitation to enter the streets from Istedgade.

Creating a space
Where Abel Cathrines Gade and Viktoriagade meet, there is currently a large amount of asphalt: an unnecessarily large area is laid out as road space.
An obvious future ambition could therefore be to transform some of the road area into a green recreational space. Within the current budget, we do not have the opportunity to repave the asphalt, but through smaller measures we can regulate traffic so that a square is created.

Create coherence and a common identity throughout the street
To create coherence (and greenery) in the two streets, it is proposed to plant creepers at all entrance doors in the two streets as a continuous element.

It is also proposed to create a welcome portal on both Abel Cathrines Gade and Viktoriagade from Istedgade. A portal with wisteria or similar creepers growing up the facades and crossing over the streets.
